The University of Michigan
Breast Imaging division represents a specialized group of clinical
imaging services within the Department of Radiology. The
fellowship-trained faculty, advanced technology, and broad experience as
a tertiary referral center make this department among the best in North
America. Clinically, over 35,000 examinations are performed each year
utilizing state of the art equipment including FDA approved digital
mammography, eight dedicated mammography units, four ultrasound breast
scanners with Doppler capabilities, vacuum assisted stereotactic core
biopsy capabilities and a high field MRI with dedicated breast coil.
Specialized diagnostic techniques include stereotactic and ultrasound
guided core biopsies, fine needle aspirations and wire localization
procedures.
The Breast Imaging division is involved in teaching of medical
students, residents, fellows and visiting professors from all over the
world. The division consists of a prominent group of distinguished
radiologists involved in several research projects and grants with
hundreds of papers in the literature. The breast imaging radiologists
collaborate with a multi-specialty team at the Breast Care Center
involving specialized breast surgeons, pathologists, oncologists,
radiation oncologists, and plastic surgeons. The breast imaging
radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, technologists and nurses at the
University of Michigan strive to make each patients visit as personal
and pleasant as possible.
In the Breast Imaging Division, there is a close working relationship
with the departments of Surgery, Pathology, Radiation Oncology, and
Internal Medicine, which enhances the understanding of breast disease
from many perspectives. The division is also actively involved in the
multidisciplinary University of Michigan Breast Care Center, a major
referral center for woman with both malignant and benign breast
diseases. A weekly work conference is held in which many patients with
breast problems, both malignant and benign, are discussed with all
Departments present.
Weekly morning conferences are held in
the division to allow informal review of interesting and difficult cases
with pathologic correlation. The division also participates in
departmental noon teaching conferences and co-sponsors the Breast
Imaging symposium with participation by University of Michigan faculty
and invited experts in the field of breast imaging and breast cancer
from other major academic centers from all over the world. Breast
Imaging is part of the U/M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our Center is a
designated National Comprehensive Cancer Network Member (NCCN).
