The University of Michigan Division of Neuroradiology consists of
16 Neuroradiologists. The division is responsible for all neuroimaging
performed at the main University Hospital, Mott Childrens Hospital,
the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital and one outpatient
facility. The faculty is a mix of senior, mid-level and junior members.
The faculty has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, 50 non-peered
reviewed papers, 100 book chapters, 12 books, 500 abstracts, 200 Scientific
Exhibits, and 550 presentations. The expertise of the division is
vertically integrated with faculty with special expertise in Interventional
Neuroradiology, Head and Neck Radiology, Spine Imaging, Epilepsy,
and advanced metabolic imaging techniques in both MR and CT. The members
of the faculty include:

The division
has access to six magnets, which include dedicated 1.5T and 3T units
research. The division has close collaboration with GE and Philips
Medical Systems. Our magnets have full 3D CSI, diffusion tensor,
fMRI and perfusion capabilities. Our clinical 3T Acheva is a state-of-the-art
magnet that was installed in the Fall of 2004. The first U.S. installation
of this magnet was in our Division. A second dedicated research
3T is next to our clinical scanner and will be operational in the
summer of 2005. A dedicated Pediatric MR (1.5T Philips) will be
in operation in July 2005.
There are currently
9 CT scanners. These consist of 64 slice (1), 16 slice (3), 8 slice
(2), and 4 slice (2). There are plans to add two more 64 slice scanners.
In addition, the department has a dedicated 3D CT lab for advanced
post-processing (CTA, CT perfusion). The Division is also responsible
for interpreting head and neck PET-CT studies generated from a Siemens
Biograph PET-CT unit.
The division
performs approximately 17,000 neuro MRI exams and over 20,000 neuro
CTs per year. There are a total of six angiography suites, three
of which are dedicated biplane units. The division performs approximately
800 diagnostic and interventional neuro procedures per year of which
over 300/yr are interventional spine procedures. Neuroangiography
is performed on a state-of-the-art Siemens Artis biplane system.
Close collaboration
with the Department of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Otolaryngology,
and Radiation Oncology provides a stimulating collegial atmosphere
with over 20 multidisciplinary conferences per week. These conferences
include teaching conferences, tumor boards and clinical working
conferences.
The division
has a strong emphasis on research. Faculty members are principle
investigators on grants focused on physiologic and metabolic imaging
and multi-institutional trials sponsored by the National Cancer
Institute. There is also a very close research collaboration with
the MR Research Division headed by Brian
Ross, PhD and Tom
Chenevert, PhD, which has received nearly 20 million dollars
in additional research funding during the past year. The neuroradiology
division is significantly funded by extramural support. Suffice
it to say that the research potential is unlimited!
The Division
has an ACGME accredited Neuroradiology
fellowship program. The Division is currently accredited
for four fellows per year with plans to expand this to five-fellows/year
in the near future. |
