Fellowship in Breast Imaging

This fellowship consists of in-depth training in all aspects of breast imaging. Over 35,000 examinations are performed annually in the Division of Breast Imaging. As of July 2001, state-of-the-art equipment includes FDA approved Full Field Digital Mammography, 8 dedicated mammography units, 4 ultrasound breast scanners with the highest resolution transducers and Doppler capabilities, prone digital biopsy table with vacuum assisted core biopsy capabilities and a high field MRI with dedicated breast coil.

Ample opportunities are provided to gain experience in core biopsy techniques with over 400 core biopsies performed yearly with both vacuum assisted stereotactic core biopsies and ultrasound core biopsies. Approximately 300 wire localization procedures are performed using both digital and conventional mammography techniques. Other procedures include fine needle cyst aspirations, galactography, and pneumocystograms.

Research Opportunities with designated nonclinical time are provided for the breast imaging fellows. The Department of Radiology’s strong research programs in ultrasound, MRI, computer-aided diagnosis, and physics offer a multimodality approach to the study and diagnosis of breast disease.

The University of Michigan’s Women’s Imaging/Mammography fellowship will participate in the NRMP Match Program beginning in 2004.

For more information on Mammography, contact the Division Director of Breast Imaging, Mark Helvie, M.D.
