The program offers a
one-year ACGME accredited fellowship training in vascular and interventional
radiology. The objective of the program is to provide fellows with
a comprehensive, supervised educational experience in vascular and
interventional radiology according to the ACGME approved "Special
Requirements for Subspecialty Training in Vascular and Interventional
Radiology." The training program offers didactic and clinical
experiences that encompass the full clinical spectrum of vascular
and interventional radiology. Trainees will have the opportunity
to carry out all necessary procedures under close supervision, including
pre-procedure evaluation of patients, various vascular and nonvascular
special procedures, interpretation of diagnostic images, consultation
with clinicians, admission to the interventional radiology service,
and post-procedure follow-up care. Trainees will be instructed in
proper use of physiologic monitoring, noninvasive vascular imaging,
antibiotics, narcotics, conscious sedation, and other drugs commonly
used in special procedures.
Examples of diagnostic vascular procedures
include peripheral arteriography, visceral arteriography, pulmonary
arteriography, venography, splenoportography, carbon dioxide angiography,
gadolinium arteriography, selective venous sampling, and intravascular
ultrasound. Time is also allotted for training in magnetic resonance
angiography.
Examples of vascular interventional procedures include
infusion therapy, catheter-directed thrombolysis, mechanical thrombofragmentation,
embolotherapy, angioplasty and related percutaneous recanalization
procedures for arterial and venous occlusions, stent placement,
filter insertion, foreign body removal, TIPS, AAA endovascular repair,
percutaneous fenestration for aortic dissection, and central venous
access.
Examples of nonvascular procedures include percutaneous
and transvenous biopsy, abscess drainage, biliary interventions
(cholecystostomy, biliary drainage, stone extraction, dilation,
choledochoscopy, and stenting), GI interventions (percutaneous gastrostomy,
gastrojejunostomy, jejunostomy, cecostomy, and dilation), and genitourinary
interventions (percutaneous nephrostomy, dilation, and stone extraction),
and vertebroplasty.
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate
in the vascular clinic service with vascular surgeons. Fellows are
encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical and basic research
projects.
We participate
in the NRMP's Specialty Matching Services (SMS) to fill our ACGME
positions. The exact interview and match dates are determined each
year by the NRMP. You can obtain more information about the Match
at the NRMP website.

DIRECT Pathway Residency Positions
The University of Michigan Department of Radiology accepts applications for the DIRECT pathway (Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Enhanced Clinical Training), which is an ABR-approved program for accelerated training in Diagnostic Radiology and Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
Candidates must have completed a minimum of two post-graduate years of clinical training in an ACGME approved clinical residency to qualify for entry into this program, with this minimum training having been completed prior to matriculation into Radiology residency.
To be considered for acceptance into this program, candidates must have a very strong academic record. The total number of months of training in the other core diagnostic radiology areas is reduced, which puts added demands on the resident for his or her education.
For more information about the DIRECT Pathway, please view the American Board of Radiology website.
