Fellowship in Neuroradiology

The Division of Neuroradiology offers a comprehensive 1 or 2 year educational experience in Neuroradiology. The fellowship program is accredited for 4 ACGME one-year positions. These positions are offered through the Neuroradiology fellowship match conducted by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Completion of the second year of the neuroradiology training program is strongly encouraged but not required. The entirety of the ACGME fellow training occurs at the University of Michigan Health Center, which includes dedicated rotations at Mott Children’s Hospital and the Holden-Women’s Hospital which are attached to the main University Hospital. During the second-year, the fellows may have rotations at the nearby VA Medical Center.

The Neuroradiology Division is very busy performing nearly 900 arteriograms, many of which are specialized therapeutic interventional studies, over 300 myelograms, fluoroscopically guided lumbar punctures and biopsies of the head/neck and spine, 18,000 MR studies and 18,000 CT studies over the past year. The patient population at the University of Michigan Hospital is predominantly referral in origin; however, there are also a large number of community medicine cases. Accordingly, the quality and diversity of clinical material is outstanding. Clinical and research oriented neuroradiology and neuroscience conferences are presented daily, including a weekly conference devoted to the fellows.

Our fellows also participate in the teaching efforts of the neuroradiology division. Fellows participate in the teaching of third and fourth year medical students, radiology residents and residents from other services who rotate through our division. In the past fellows have also participated in teaching second year medical students in an introductory course in neuroradiology and in giving the radiology residents’ daily noon conference.

The Division of Neuroradiology and the Department of Radiology have excellent physical facilities. There are eight state-of-the-art GE CT scanners, all of which are multidetector scanners. In conjunction with the nuclear medicine department, we are performing examinations of the head and neck on a CT-PET unit. There are five clinical GE 1.5T MR scanners, one of which is located at Mott Hospital and two of which are located at the East Ann Arbor Outpatient facility. There are two 3T Phillips MRI scanners, one for clinical use and the other for research.

Our state of the art imaging equipment allows us to perform advanced imaging procedures including MR spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging and MR and CT perfusion imaging. There are six angiography suites, three of which are dedicated biplane units, including a Siemens Artis biplane angiographic suite utilized for diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologic procedures.

There are fourteen neuroradiology faculty members all of whom participate in the clinical, teaching and research activities of our division.

There is a tradition of collaborative clinical and basic science research between members of the Division of Neuroradiology and the other clinical Neuroscience Departments. Senior research physicists with special interest in MR physics, contrast agents, digital image processing, and MR spectroscopy are available within the Department of Radiology for technical and research support. All fellows are expected to become involved in a research project during their fellowship under the direction of a faculty mentor and are given dedicated time for this. At least one abstract should be submitted to a national meeting as a result of this research. Fellows will be supported to present all abstracts at national meetings for which they are first author.

We participate in the NRMP's Specialty Matching Services (SMS) to fill our ACGME positions. The exact interview and match dates are determined each year by the NRMP. You can obtain more information about the Match at the NRMP website. Vascular/Interventional, Pediatric Radiology, Neuroradiology, and Nuclear Medicine use a unique application form, which can be accessed at the following link :
